It’s one
of the country’s biggest St. Patrick’s Day events, and it’s right in the heart
of downtown Houston. Don’t miss the 49th Annual St. Patrick’s Day
Parade on Saturday, March 15 at noon. The festivities
get underway at Minute Maid Park at the corner of
Texas and Hamilton
and will include more than 100
entries.
The parade always
charms both the Irish and the Irish-at-heart, and after it’s over, plenty of
options are available. Keep the spirit of the holiday going well into the
evening at one of downtown’s cozy pubs. Shay McElroy’s at
Texas and Main
evokes the spirit of Erin with a
warm space created around a 19th-century bar
shipped from Ireland. Slainte Irish Pub on
Main
is always hopping and has one of the
most extensive drink lists downtown.
On St. Patty’s
Day, Monday, March 17 you can “get your green on” at Bells &
Whistles Café at 1501 Texas where you can get your
once-a-year serving of corned beef and cabbage and lemon-lime icebox pie during
lunch. Even Italian eatery Picazo’s at 1421
Preston is getting into the spirit with green food and drinks and Irish
music. Enjoy everything from corned beef and cabbage to split pea soup and green
mashed potatoes. That night you can once again hit the pub scene on
Main with a special treat at The Flying Saucer
featuring $2.75 Irish pints and green Jell-O shots. Enjoy live music by the Lost
Boys while you thank your lucky stars you’re in downtown
Houston.
