COMMUTER ALERT:

Greenspoint Drive Reconstruction Begins Today

The much-anticipated improvements along Greenspoint Drive get under way today, May 6th, and as is often the case with improvements, the price is temporary inconveniences.

For the next 10 months, Greenspoint Drive will see intermittent lane closures from Greens Road to the Greenspoint Drive bridge south of Beltway 8 as construction crews add medians; place utilities underground; enhance sidewalks, bus stops and benches; and add lush landscaping and public art.

Beginning at 9 a.m. today at Greens Road, crews from SER Construction will restripe lanes to redirect all Greenspoint Drive traffic to two-way traffic on the northbound lanes. Demolition of the southbound lanes is expected to begin Thursday, May 7th, and portions of the lanes will be closed for the next two to three months,

Once the southbound lanes are completed, both directions of traffic will be moved to those lanes while the northbound lanes undergo reconstruction. The entire project is expected to last approximately 10 months.

Funded by the Greater Greenspoint Redevelopment Authority, this project improves vehicle and pedestrian access while laying the groundwork for future development along the street. More than 200 trees will be planted, including large canopied trees and crepe myrtles. Intersections will be enhanced with brick pavers, and artistic sculptures will adorn new medians lining the street.

This project is one of several undertaken by the Redevelopment Authority, which is committed to combining form and functionality with the addition of art components to public infrastructure projects. Recent examples include the painted columns under Beltway 8 at its intersections with I-45 and Greenspoint Drive, and bridges along Greenspoint Drive and Benmar which boast artistic forms and tile mosaic inlays.
