COMMUTER ALERT:

Temporary Lane Closures Monday & Tuesday Nights Mark Start of SHP Lane Widening

Construction has started on a long-awaited freeway project that will widen the Sam Houston Parkway in both directions between I-45 and Hardy Toll Road. Once completed, the construction project will help ease congestion on the highly-traveled roadway and make it easier to travel along the corridor.

The concrete barriers marking the beginning of construction will be placed along the inside shoulder of the main lanes at Imperial Valley. On Monday, Dec. 7, one inside lane of eastbound traffic will be closed from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. to lay the barriers. On Tuesday, Dec. 8, one inside lane of westbound traffic will be closed from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Once the concrete barriers are in place, the inside shoulder approaching Imperial Valley Bridge will be closed, but all main lanes of traffic will remain open.

The project is comprised of two components. The first is widening the main lanes and adding two lanes at the Imperial Valley Bridge, as well as re-striping the remaining roadway to accommodate five lanes of traffic. The second component is reconstruction and expansion of the frontage roads, widening them from two lanes to three lanes. Some lane closures are expected when work begins on the frontage roads. The Greenspoint District is already working with the City and TxDOT to establish alternate routes and detours in order to minimize inconvenience to area motorists.

The project is expected to take two years to complete.

Once completed, the new road infrastructure will include new sidewalks, new storm drainage system and other amenities. The project is a collaborative effort between the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
