GGD Programs Add Manpower, Focus to Combat Spikes in Crime

Recent headlines have brought attention to increases in crime throughout the city of Houston. While local law enforcement is working hard to fight crime citywide, the Greater Greenspoint District (GGD) is providing the advantage of a targeted focus on the Greenspoint area. Through partnerships and grants, the GGD is providing more than 1,500 patrol hours to the area each month, representing nearly $1 million in law enforcement services over the next year -- that’s in addition to the regular service provided by the city and county!

Harris County Sheriff’s Department and Off-Duty Patrol Contracts – The GGD funds these programs that target crime through high police visibility and interaction with citizens and businesses. Approximately 100 patrol hours are added each week through this contract.

Houston Police Department (HPD) Overtime Program – This 15-month partnership between the GGD and HPD will provide an additional 7,000 hours of police service to the Greenspoint area. This program targets crime by focusing on three key areas: undercover narcotics, heightened enforcement of traffic and other laws, and high visibility patrol operations.

Greenspoint Stopping Auto Theft (GSAT) – This program is partially funded through a $247,000 grant from the Texas Auto Theft Prevention Authority and adds approximately 160 patrol hours to the Greenspoint area each week. GSAT targets auto theft through investigative and surveillance work focusing on suspicious persons and/or businesses that profit from auto theft. You can call the GSAT Tip Line at 281-875-4167 to report information involving auto thefts in north Houston. For thefts in progress or other emergencies, dial 9-1-1.

In addition to these efforts, the GGD is encouraging everyone to take a part in minimizing crime. Simple measures like locking cars, removing items from sight and maintaining awareness of one’s surroundings, all work to significantly decrease the opportunity for crime to occur. Let’s work with local law enforcement to help fight this disturbing citywide trend.
